Using a Swimming Pool as a Musical Instrument (Decent Sampler VST)
During the summer months, there is nothing better than cooling off on a hot day with a pool. Even a relatively affordable $200 above ground one like this can be a life savor. For today’s VST I thought it would be nice to bring out my Field recorder and get some use out of the pool. Making my relaxing time productive as well as refreshing. I recorded the ambience around the pool, such as the crickets and cicadas, as well as some tree frogs and birds. Next I recorded some sounds of the water, some splashes and the sound of the pump running. Finally to top it off, I got some percussive sounds of me hitting and slapping the side of the pool itself.
Now there are a bunch of ways to use these sounds. The most obvious of which is to take the foley sounds and create a percussion based instrument. These are great ways to add texture and rhythm to a track that feels unique and organic. However I didn’t want to stop there. I also wanted to make a more tonal instrument. There are several ways to do this, in the past I have used granular synthesis with my 3d printer to accomplish this, for this however I thought it would be nice to explore tonal resonance to create some lush pad sounds as well. In the end I think this is a fun, texture full instrument made to celebrate the fun of summer using my swimming pool.
As always, I hope you all enjoy and if you make anything interesting with this or just want to message me about this vst, feel free to reach out.
